From Street to Hope, the Education Model used by Fundación Pro Niños de la Calle, a book of María de Lourdes Garza Caligaris

Fundación Pro Niños de la Calle, I.A.P., presented the book From Street to Hope, the Education Model used by Fundación Pro Niños de la Calle, from author María de Lourdes Garza Caligaris.

The book describes the problems, theoretical concepts and tools developed by Fundación Pro Niños de la Calle, I.A.P to be used with the kids ("chavos") in their way out of the street. This publication was possible thanks to the program «Learning and Building of Abilities» financed by HSBC and Quiera, a foundation of Mexico's Bankers Association.

Leaving the street is a difficult process; while being in the street, the "chavos" face conditions and dangers, such as drugs, mistreat, insecurity, lack of limits and extreme poverty, resulting in their personality disorganization.

Due to this situation, Pro Niños' methodology is designed to accompany the "chavos" in a process which permits them acknowledge themselves as valuable persons which deserve better life conditions. Through the activities in the model, they develop abilities, fortify their confidence and increase their self-esteem. This way they may be able to recognize their life in the street as a transitory situation.

Since 1993 Pro Niños works with children and youngsters who live in the street. Along the last 16 years, our foundation has attended 2,109 "chavos", from which 744 have opted to  definitively move away from the street life, thus having access to better conditions for their development.
